As the lower seed, Guerrero had to out-slug top seed,
Randy Arozarena. Guerrero slugged a finals-record 25
home runs to Arozarena's 23, getting the win after he'd already
defeated Mookie Betts in the semis.
Guerrero Jr. Becomes First Father-Son Duo to Win
We have a new Home Run Derby champion as
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. took home the crown for the
first time Monday night. His father, Vladimir Guerrero,
won the Derby in 2007, making them the first father-
son duo to win the trophy.
The Derby Format
The 2023 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby was a home
run hitting contest between eight batters from Major League
Baseball (MLB). The event was held at T-Mobile Park in
Seattle, Washington on July 17, 2023. The format of the
Derby was as follows:
- Each batter had three minutes to hit as many home runs as possible.
- Batters were allowed to take as many swings as they wanted during their three minutes.
- The batter with the most home runs at the end of the three minutes advanced to the next round.
- The Derby was a single-elimination tournament, with the winner being the batter who hit the most home runs in the final round.
